The Cancer GoFundMe Rugpull
A frequent criticism from those outside the industry is that crypto is a wild west full of scams and hacks. The recent headline breaking hack at Bybit certainly doesn’t help prove otherwise, and this recent scam I came across on Twitter doesn’t either.
It’s an expose of Ronnie Magrehbi who is thought to be behind launching tokens, all seemingly to raise funds for children with cancer, but which in fact turned out to be rugpulls.
He used real GoFundMe pages made by the sick child’s families, ran Twitter Spaces where he played ChatGPT generated scripts pretending to be the family, and what’s even more diabolical is that after these rugpulls he Tweeted from the accounts gloating about rugging and even wishing harm to the children.
Ronnie has been involved in hacking and extorting various athletes back in 2017 and 2019, as well as a carjacking where he threatened the driver at gunpoint, and he’s no stranger to crypto as in Jan 2025 he livestreamed a rugpull whilst in an uber and then seemed to drive off with the car!
His secondary Twitter account (after the first was suspended) contains a diatribe of expletive laden tweets which reference these scams and show zero remorse whatsoever. In fact he brags about the scams he’s run. One of which is being behind a viral token launch for a homeless man who he came across on the street. However he later rugged the project and claims not to have given a penny to the homeless man.
Whilst his account only has a tiny following, some of his posts have hundreds of replies and he generates this activity by running giveaways for his “community”. He’s also shared his Solana account to gloat at the >$100k in tokens he has in there: https://solscan.io/account/2885CfbAC62UUX3HMNaB7YzR81CetaKkyqTwKiQBnChf and claims that his rugpull activity even netted him $3m one month.
Ronnie therefore seems to be making his living scamming those who wish to donate to sick children and gloating about it to anyone who will listen to him — with many of those listeners just hoping for the breadcrumbs he throws out from these ill gotten funds.
